SIGN THE PETITION TO GUARANTEE REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS IN COLORADO

Leagues of Women Voters members in Colorado are part of the Colorado
Coalition to Protect Reproductive Freedom effort to keep abortion safe and legal in our state.

Our members are volunteering to get signatures during the month of March to place Initiative 89
on the ballot on November 5, 2024.

This initiative would safeguard the right to abortion by adding that right in the Colorado State Constitution.

If you'd would like to sign the petition and would like to know when one of our volunteers will be in your area
getting signatures, email LWV of Arapahoe and Douglas Counties with your name, phone, and email at
lwvadc.defending.democracy@gmail.com with PETITION on the subject line.

We also need League members to volunteer for phone banking. Contact the LWV of Colorado
at 303-863-0437 or info@lwvcolorado.org with your name, phone, and email
and PHONE BANK on the subject line for more information.

THE LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS CELEBRATES WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH

Historic photo of two woman - women's suffrage

In March the League of Women Voters celebrates the women who changed history.

Why is March Women's History Month?

According to PBS, first there was a local celebration in Santa Rosa, CA.
Then there was National Women's History Week starting on March 8, International Women’s Day.
Inspired by this, women's groups petitioned Congress for national recognition and Women's History Month began.

Read League's history of women's suffrage and League's work to protect voting rights for all  here

Featured historic figure: Ida B. Wells

Born into slavery, Ida B. Wells was one of the early leaders of the women's suffrage and the civil rights movement.
As a journalist, she led an antilynching crusade and fought for women’s rights.
She also fought tirelessly for the right to vote, all while facing discrimination within the suffragist movement.
In 1913, Wells co-founded the  Alpha Suffrage Club,  the first Black women's suffrage group in the state of Illinois.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

Education

School classroom with students

Based on the League’s commitment to justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion, we believe the earlier drafts of the CO State Board of Education's Social Studies Standards Revisions, such as the November 2021 recommendations issued by the History, Culture, Social Contributions, and Civil Government in Education Commission, are more inclusive and representative of all of Colorado’s diverse citizenry now and throughout its history than the June 2022 Final Recommended Revisions. The earlier revisions better honor the intent of HB19-1192 "Inclusion of American Minorities in Teaching Civil Government".
